March 25, 2007, it has been 200 years since the British abolishment of the slave trade law (1807). The 200th anniversary events were held Ghana and England.
The 200th anniversary events were held Ghana which was a base of the slave trade and England which was the world largest slave trade nation in the 18th century. Citizens’ organizations demonstrated horrible history of the slave trade by reenacting the captivity - wearing chains on their necks and marching on the street to London. The part of the black organizations opposed celebrating the 200th anniversary because that the slave trade continued even after abolishment law was passed.
The British Prime Minister Blair sent Ghana a message saying “the slave trade was one of the most disgraceful intrigues in the history, and take this opportunity to express our deep sorrow and regret.” England has never declared official apology yet. London mayor criticized the British government “No official apology, the British government is vulgar.” The British archbishop also emphasized official apology. The media explained that “The Prime Minister’s legal advisers counseled against apologizing. Official apology means acceptance of indemnification for individuals and/or groups.”
The slave trade – purchase and transportation of Black Africans to Caribbean islands and North America lasted from 16th to 18th century, and approximately 12 million slaves were estimated to be traded during the period.
