According to the test conducted by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and others, there might be association between uses of cell phone, and quality and counts of spermatozoa.
The test was conducted on 364 male patients undergoing sterile treatments in Mumbai (former Bombay), India. Patients use GSM cell phones with 800-1900 MHz. These patients were divided into three groups based on hours they spend on cell phones - 0, less than 2, 2 to4 and more than 4 hours in a day
The result: Patients, especially, who use their cell phones more than 4 hours in a day showed low quality spermatozoa in three categories of movement, survival capacity and form/shape. The longer you use your cell phone, the lower quality spermatozoa become. The mechanism of this test result has not been confirmed, however, radioactivity which cell phones emit could be the one to be blamed; it damages DNA and has a bad effect on cells which produce spermatozoa. A doctor infers that the cause of low quality spermatozoa is having a cell phone near reproductive organs by putting it in a pocket and on belt on your waist. Other specialists indicate that heavy cell phone users have other factors; stress and office works (longer seating time) that could affect on spermatozoa quality. The test was questioned by other specialists that in this test, other factors such as age, smoking and exercise were excluded. Moreover, all participants are patients undergoing sterile treatments which do not represent general male population. At this point, the connection between cell phone uses and quality of spermatozoa hasn’t reached to the conclusion. Cell phone technology is relatively new, and nobody can conclude whether cell phones are dangerous or not at this point. It is all up to individuals’ decisions; would you take this test result seriously and give up some hours to protect your spermatozoa or just remain the same until influence of cell phones to human will be confirmed?
