Has everyone gotten a chance to
see live earth concert? Live Earth is a
24-hour, 7-continent (New York, London, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney and Hamburg) concert series
took place on 7/7/07 that brought together more than 100 music artists and 2
billion people to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis.
The
event was great but to combat global warming, every one of us must take action.
You do not need to be a super hero or famous to start saving our planet. You
can start from one single small effort in your everyday life. Your effort seems
to have no influence on global scale, however efforts of 6.6 billions will. Many
a little makes a mickle.
13 things we can do to save our planet.
- Switch to fluorescent lights
from incandescent lights. In most cases, fluorescent lights have about 10 time
longer life and require about 1/3 of electricity which traditional lights
consume. Not only save our environment but also save your money. In addition, fluorescent
lights produce much less heat compared to incandescent lights, which means safer
and less production of greenhouse gases.
- Keep the room temperature at
68˚ F (20˚ C) in winter. Caulk and weather-strip around doors and
windows to plug air leaks. It can cut down emission of about 29.5 kg of CO2 annually.
- Keep the room temperature at
82˚ F (28˚ C) in summer. Minimize coming of
the direct rays of the sun into a room by using curtain or blind. It can cut down emission of about 16.8 kg of CO2 annually.
- Turn down your water heater
thermostat; 120 degrees is usually hot enough.
Wrap your water heater in an insulating jacket.
- Check air pressure in your
car tires periodically. Proper air pressure improves fuel efficiency by 3.3 %,
which means you can save approximately 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of gasoline.
- Purchase energy-efficient
products. Look for energy star labels on products.
- Minimize the use of hot
water when you are washing dishes and doing laundry.
- Practice 3 Rs – Reduce Reuse
and Recycle. Try not to use paper cups, plates, plastic forks or knives. Ask
sales person not to overpackaging your purchasing items. Never ever throw away
old books, newspapers, magazines, even grocery bags etc. Recycle them. Purchase
recycled material products. Use rechargeable batteries.
- Bring your own reusable bag
to grocery shopping.
- In stead of driving a car,
walk, ride a bicycle, carpool and take mass transportation to work, shopping,
school and anywhere else possible. Emission gas from cars is the one of the
number one cause of greenhouse effect.
- Choose a fuel efficient
vehicle. Hybrid cars have approximately twice more fuel efficient and emit 50%
less greenhouse gases than average brand new vehicles.
- Stop receiving unnecessary
mails. You can stop receiving credit card offers by calling 1-800-5-OPTOUT
(1-800-567-8688) or signing up on www.optoutscreen.com. Millions of trees,
billions of gallons of water and enormous amount of energy are used to create
junk mail each year.
- If you have a backyard,
plant trees.
